Methodological Note

The total number of exports on the bar chart may exceed the total number of exports depicted on the map because it includes guns sold in the selected state and recovered in U.S. territories (e.g. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands).

Nationwide, just under 1 percent of guns that cross state lines originate in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia, and are recovered in a crime in a U.S. territory.

Likewise, the total number of imports on the bar chart may exceed the total number of imports depicted on the map because it includes guns originating from U.S. territories and recovered in the selected state.

Nationwide, less than 0.2% of guns originate from U.S. territories and are recovered in a crime in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia.
